PUD buying wind power from Oregon

Snohomish County PUD entered in to two agreements on Tuesday to purchase wind energy from Hay Canyon Wind Project, located in Sherman County, Ore., along the Columbia River Gorge.

The utility is expected to receive all of the project’s output starting in mid-February. The capacity of the project is 100.8 megawatts. It is expected to provide enough power annually for 20,000 homes. The contracts are for 15 and 18 years.

The long-term power contracts are with a subsidiary of the Spanish wind energy company Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. Iberdrola’s North American headquarters is located in Portland, Ore.

Other terms of the energy contracts were not available Tuesday. PUD officials say parts of the contracts are confidential and exempt from public disclosure laws.
