School Winners: Sno-Isle Tech students in national challenge

Students from Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center in Everett will advance in May to a national construction challenge competition in Knoxville, Tenn.
The high school students worked on solutions to three challenges based on infrastructure issues, service technology and manufacturing design during the regional rally in Bellevue.
Appraisers scored team solutions. The regional rally was hosted by Master Builders Career Connection at the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties office in Bellevue and drew more than 60 Washington students joining more than 2,000 students competing nationally.
Lake Stevens Apple Award recipients
Several Lake Stevens school district employees will receive recognition for their contributions to their schools.
They will receive the district’s Apple Awards for January and February. The recipients are: Chuck Darlington, head custodian at Cavelero Mid High; Ken Collins, principal at Lake Stevens High School; Kevin Knowles, maintenance and grounds supervisor for Lake Stevens School District; Lindsay Washo, fourth-grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary; Dennis McFadden of Mount Pilchuck Elementary; Carrie Larson, nurse at Glenwood Elementary; Kirstie Kelley, head secretary at Sunnycrest Elementary; and Holly Grytness, fourth-grade teacher at Skyline Elementary.
Everett High cheer squad Hawaii bound
Six Everett High School cheerleaders will take a trip to Hawaii from June 25 to July 2 to work with cheer coaches at the University of Hawaii. The girls will raise funds to pay for their trip with car washes and other activities. The cheerleaders are Shelby Brackett, Kelsey Tarr, Vivien Lewis-McKenney, Kelly Bogart, Cheyenne Hightower and Polly Rinehart.
Marine Corps JROTC teams compete well
The Marine Corps JROTC team representing Snohomish, Glacier Peak and Monroe high schools posted impressive performances at a Burlington-Edison High School competition with nine other schools on Feb. 7.
Color Guard No. 2 under the command of Cadet 1st Lt. Tiffany Carey took first place. Color Guard No. 1 under the command of Cadet Cpt. Deryk Machado finished second. Unarmed drill team under the command of Cadet 1st Lt. Tiffany Carey placed second, and she also finished first in the unarmed drill commander category.
The armed drill team under the command of Cadet 1st Lt. Maggie Smelser placed fourth and she earned a second place in the commander armed drill team commander category.
Cadet L. Cpl Gregory Lane took fifth place in the unarmed drill down, and Cadet Gunnery Sgt. Amber Startzman earned first place. In the armed drill down, Cadet Gunnery Sgt. Samuel Gagner was third.
Rifle team No. 1 finished fourth. Cadet 1st Lt. Taylor Hackel earned fifth place in the experienced category.
Stanwood second in science invitational
Stanwood High School’s Science Team earned second place at the Science Olympiad Invitational on Feb. 14 in Seattle.
Fourteen high school teams from Western Washington and Portland, Ore., competed in 23 science and engineering events.
Students who earned first-place finishes were Christy Swartz and Kyle Murray, astronomy; Derek Britain and Jimmy Besancon, electric vehicle; Jimmy Besancon and Jason Ervin, junkyard challenge; Rebecca Raible and Derek Britain, Write it, Do it; Kyle Murray and Christy Swartz, physics lab; Derek Britain and Rebecca Raible, remote sensing; and John A. Parker and Ryan Miller in the cell biology event.
Students who earned second-place finishes were Kyle Blackburn and John A. Parker, technical problem solving; Jimmy Besancon and Christy Swartz, fossils; John A. Parker and Briana Palmer, forensics; and David Zietz and Kyle Blackburn in the Dynamic Planet event.
Students who earned third-place finishes were Briana Palmer and Max Osnes, health science; John A. Parker and Josh Hamre, Picture This event; Josh Hamre and John A. Parker, herpetology; Derek Britain and Jimmy Besancon, It’s About Time event; and Josh Hamre and April Thayer in the Egg-o-Naut event.
