TACOMA — It wasn’t quite midnight, but the glass slipper the Lake Stevens boys basketball team wore slipped off nonetheless.
In their first trip to the Class 4A boys basketball tournament, senior Sean Stickney scored a game-high 18 points but the Vikings lost their opening-round game against Garfield 54-39 Wednesday night at the Tacoma Dome.
Garfield advances to play a quarterfinal game against Gonzaga Prep at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Tacoma Dome. Gonzaga Prep beat Decatur 60-54 Wednesday night to advance to the next round.
Lake Stevens (20-5 overall) fell into the consolation bracket and plays Decatur in a loser-out game at 2 p.m. today.
Garfield (21-3) took advantage of Lake Stevens’ miscues in the second half to push its lead to double-digits early in the fourth quarter.
No member of the Bulldogs scored in double digits. De’Andre Taylor and Kellen Landry each scored eight points for Garfield and sophomore star Tony Wroten Jr. finished with seven.
Junior Shane Kaska finished with 11 points for the Vikings, and senior T.J. Dodge had six.
Lake Stevens won the Wesco North crown and edged Stanwood 54-38 in a loser-out game on Feb. 28 to earn District 1’s third and final berth — and its first state berth in 27 years.
