SNOHOMISH — The Mountlake Terrace boys soccer team knew it was in for a tough match against Glacier Peak.
Brothers Manix and Jonathan Alvarez scored on each side of halftime and Terrace kept its composure for a 2-1 season-opening, non-conference win Tuesday night at Snohomish Stadium.
“It was a very intense game,” Terrace head coach Ken Higgins said. “Glacier Peak came off hard right off the start, knowing the style that they play, the guys responded and hung with them end-for-end on the field.”
Manix Alvarez opened the scoring in the 33rd minute after his brother Jonathan corraled the ball in the deep left corner and sent it to the top of the 18-yard box where Manix blasted home a goal to the upper left corner. The Hawks doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Manix, a junior, sent a long ball over the defenders and Jonathan, a freshman, raced by them and beat the Glacier Peak goalkeeper one-on-one.
The Grizzlies pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute when Riley McNamara put home a clean shot at close range, but Terrace’s defense held on and Hawks goalkeeper Ben Winters stopped a number of close attempts.
“The Mountlake Terrace goals had an amazing game, we had a lot of chances probably 30 shots on goal,” Glacier Peak head coach Daghan Kesim said.
