Nuts & Bolts: Gardening workshops

Published 12:22 pm Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Green up: Though turf-grass lawns have received a bad rap because of mishandling of pesticides and fertilizers, it’s possible to grow healthy and ecologically balanced lawns without huge water bills or pollution.

That’s according to lawn expert Gwen Stahnke, who will teach gardeners how to establish new lawns and renovate old ones from 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 6 at the Washington State University Snohomish County Extension offices, McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Registration is $45 and includes an information kit. Download a registration form at snohomish.wsu.edu/calendar.htm by clicking on “Workshops for Homeowners, Landscapers, Horticulturists.”

Call 425-338-2400 or write klchristen@cahnrs.wsu.edu for more details.

Growing Groceries: The WSU Snohomish County Extension and local master gardeners are spearheading free “Growing Groceries” classes at different locations across the county.

Tonight, master gardeners will teach “Vegetable Gardening 101” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Granite Falls Library, 815 E. Galena St.

Learn how to plan and prepare a successful garden. Free handouts will be available. Call 425-338-2400 if you have questions.

There will also be a class on raised beds at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Julia V. Morris Centennial Garden in Monroe. See www.monicanovini.com/magicgarden or 360-793-8757 for more details.

“The Vegetable Garden in March” will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1305 Pine Ave., Snohomish. Learn about early season planting. This workshop will include a lecture, handouts and a Q&A session.

Bring extra seeds for a seed exchange. Call 360-333-0745 with questions.

Study antiques: Billed as one of the antiques epicenters of the Northwest, Snohomish is a natural setting for a club devoted to antiques and collectibles.

If you would like to know more about your estate and garage sale finds or share information about your collections and antiques, you can join the Snohomish Antique Study Club at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave., Snohomish.

On March 25, appraiser George Higby will talk about what’s hot in the antiques and collectibles market. Call 360-568-8095 or write barbara.a.rivett@gmail.com with questions.
