LYNNWOOD — A University Place man led police on a high-speed chase Sunday night after he was caught trying to steal two pairs of jeans from a store at Alderwood mall.

The man, 24, drew the attention of security guards while shopping at Nordstrom, according to a police affidavit filed Tuesday in Everett District Court.

When a guard tried to approach the man, he ran off, jumped in a car and sped away; Lynnwood police pursued him, the document said.

The chase ended when the man crashed in the 13900 block of Highway 99. The man was arrested and police recovered the jeans, worth $393.

Police believe the man also is a suspect in a Feb. 17 shoplifting incident at the Lynnwood mall, the document said. In addition to the jeans, officers found two purses and eight polo shirts.

The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree organized retail theft, eluding police and first degree possession of stolen property.
