Blu-ray blues

Shaky arms: Today, Herald baseball writer Kirby Arnold kicks off a preview of the 2009 Seattle Mariners with a look at the starting pitchers.

The good news: Miguel Batista, who was paid $2.3 million per win in 2008, is out of the rotation. The bad news: Jarrod Washburn, who collected $1.9 million per win last season, is still in it. More bad news: Lurking menacingly in the dugout is Carlos Silva, paid $2 million per win in 2008.

Speaking of cost-per-win numbers, the Giants’ Tim Lincecum, rejected by the M’s because he’s not 6 feet, 5 inches tall, was paid $22,500 per win last season.

Arnold’s preview series continues daily through Sunday, shortly before the M’s are mathematically eliminated from postseason play.

High-def money grab: Netflix plans to charge more for Blu-ray discs.

Unfortunately, the “not interested” button, which stops Netflix from recommending you add “Bucket List” to your queue, won’t make the Blu-ray surcharge go away as well.

DIY detergents: Vinegar is the main ingredient in several eco-friendly cleaner and polisher recipes for furniture, toilets and kitchen floors.

After everything’s spic-and-span, whisk in 5 tablespoons of olive oil and some garlic to dress your dinner salad.
