Drive it home

In this recession, the last thing we need is another car payment, right? It seems Ford and GM agree.

If you buy a new Taurus, Malibu or any other Ford or GM vehicle now, the automakers say they’ll cover your car payments for up to a year if you’re laid off.

We’ve got a feeling that a lot of autoworkers will be buying brand-new cars this month. Maybe a few ink-stained scribes, too.

Speaking of cars: Musician Andre 3000 of Outkast fame was stopped by police after allegedly driving 109 mph in his Porsche on a highway near Atlanta.

Sure, it’s fast, but we say a Porsche at 109 mph is generally safer than most cars at 60 mph.

Some people just can’t help themselves: Even in hard times, it seems like some people are just hard-wired to buy stuff. Take the folks who used to spend a lot of money on dining out at expensive restaurants four nights a week but now are now cooking more at home.

They’re also sharpening their sauce-making skills at cooking classes and fitting out their kitchens with spendy All-Clad cookware for perfectly caramelized food. The new frugality, indeed.
