Honors
Governor honors Stanwood man
Stanwood resident Zachary Furney has won the 2008 Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
He will be honored at the Seattle Mariners game on April 21 when the team plays the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center is offering tickets to the 7 p.m. game for $15 plus a $1 handling fee. A portion of proceeds goes to programs at the center. A bus and ticket package is available for $40. Call 360-629-5257.

School Band plays for Bethany seniors
St. Mary Magdalen School Band recently performed music such as “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Manhattan Beach March” for residents and staff at Bethany at Silver Lake.
The 12-member band, made up of sixth- through eighth-grade students, played a requested encore, “Turkish Market.”
Band members are: Ben Adams, Rory Krueger, Katherine Edson, Maggie Clark, Bradley Sauer, Gabe Astone, Elijah Santiago, Tate Johnson, Steve Papagayo, Alex Desroche, Kevin Tu and Thomas Allen.
George Washington visits Rotary Club
Jim Hodges, internationally known impersonator and new member of the Noon Rotary Club of Edmonds, gave a recent presentation about President George Washington.
Hodges, dressed as Washington, talked about how the country’s first president lived Rotary’s principals.

Critters 4-H Club runs pet food drive
The annual Pet Food Drive hosted by Snohomish County Friendly Critters 4-H Club garnered three trucks full of pet food and supplies thanks to the Granite Falls Red Apple store and the community. About $520 was also donated to help cover vet expenses for dogs rescued in Snohomish County. A $50 donation went to Saving Pets One at a Time, and $477 went to the Everett Animal Shelter.
All other food and supplies went to S.P.O.T. to support the cost of care for rescued animals.
70th birthday party benefits food bank
Fonda Ells-Prueher asked friends and family who attended her recent 70th birthday party to bring a food item for Sultan Food Bank instead of birthday gifts. They also were given the opportunity to decorate a money tree, with proceeds going to the food bank.
Food items and $651 in cash were delivered to the food bank treasurer.
Ells-Prueher’s party was at the VFW Hall in Gold Bar.
Unclad arts event raises $4,000
The recent Draw for Life marathon at Gallery by the Bay and the Unclad art show wine tasting and auction event at Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center in Stanwood raised nearly $4,000 for the Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Donation from Mill Creek Lions Club
The Mill Creek Lions Club recently presented Snohomish County Fire District 7 with a $250 check that will be used for a new smoke machine. The machine is used with Fire District 7’s Fire Safety House at community events and shows citizens how to get out of a house safely during a fire.
The smoke machine will also be used by Fire District 7’s Training Division to train firefighters.
Oak Heights school helps food bank
The Junior PTSA at Oak Heights Elementary School recently held a food drive that brought 1,302 cans and boxes of food to the group’s annual event.
The food was donated to the Lynnwood Food Bank through Volunteers of America.
