YMCA kids’ quilt tells a story

Caleb Swanson (left), Trevor Allred, Hannah Pope and Gracie Arnold display a quilt that they and others in the School-Age Child Care Program at the Southeast-Mill Creek Family YMCA made in celebration of African-American History Month.

The quilt is based on an Adire cloth, made by the people of the Yoruba tribe in Africa where the cloth is used for decoration and communication.

Many designs have special meanings, reminding people of specific proverbs or ideas such as unity, patience or peace. The paint colors used reflect the YMCA’s core values of caring (red), honesty (blue), respect (yellow) and responsibility (green).
