PREP ROUNDUP: Track, soccer

EVERETT — Archbishop Murphy’s soccer program took steps toward becoming the front runner in the Cascade Conference on Saturday afternoon, defeating Cedarcrest 2-0, handing the Red Wolves their first loss of the season.

The Wildcats (4-0 league, 5-1 overall) got on the board in the third minute when Jamie Steinman (Ian Houts assist) got a shot past Cedarcrest’s Colin McHargue. Ian Houts (Aidan Huggins assist) scored a second goal for Murphy in the 20th minute.

Wildcats head coach Eddie Fernandez said his team was lucky to get a few early goals and then, “we took a barrage of Cedarcrest offense in the second half.”

Fernandez said that Cedarcrest (3-1, 4-1) “has been at the top of the league the past two seasons.”

“It’s a big win, it’s been a while since Murphy has been able to beat Cedarcrest in boys soccer. So the kids were pretty excited about it,” Fernandez said. “I’m real proud of the way the boys are playing right now.”

Doug Ehlebracht was in goal for Archbishop Murphy. Cedarcrest’s goalkeeper was not recorded.

Coupeville 4, Lakewood 0: At Coupeville, Coupeville (3-2 league, 5-2 overall) got four goals from four different players on Saturday to take the Cascade Conference victory over Lakewood (3-2, 5-2). Jordan Lamb (Spencer Tack assist) got Coupeville on the board in the 22nd minute, Spencer Tack (unassisted) followed in the 26th minute, Jeff Wacker (Tony Sherman assist) scored in the 48th minute, and Mitch Stevenson (unassisted) scored in the 63rd minute. Evan Coleman was the goalkeeper for Coupeville, as was James Hovack for Lakewood.

Granite Falls 3, South Whidbey 2 (SO): At Langley, Granite Falls won a 4-3 shootout when a Falcon kick went wide as the Tigers edged South Whidbey (0-5 in league, 1-6 overall) in the Cascade Conference match. Granite Falls junior Maika Matalomani booted in a pair of goals within a five-minute span midway through the second half for the Tigers (1-4, 2-5). Jacob Howard assisted on the first goal. South Whidbey took a 1-0 lead with 3 minutes to go in the half, then forced overtime with a tying goal in the 77th minute.

Liberty Invite: At Renton, in early returns the Everett Boys won the Liberty Invite on Saturday with a team score of 173, edging Liberty with 163 according to coach Doug Hall. Bobby Rodgers (discus) and Seanoa Malaki (javelin) both won their events for the Seagulls with season-best throws.

Arnie Young Invitational: At Renton, in early returns from the Arnie Young Invitational on Saturday Stanwood’s Minna Fields won the 3200 and placed second in the 1600. Stanwood’s 4×400 boys relay team also took victory. Freshman Kaci Jones earned a second-place finish in the javelin for the Spartans.
