Friends of the Library to meet April 23

Betty Larman, president of The Edmonds Floretum Garden Club, welcomes the spring season at the Edmonds Friends of the Library meeting scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on April 23 in the Plaza Room of the library.

Larman will highlight the history and accomplishments of the garden club over the past 86 years, including the members’ work with the Edmonds Park Department in planting downtown street corners, filling hanging baskets, donating commemorative trees and providing thousands of bulbs to the city.

The meeting will be preceded by a coffee social at 1 p.m. New members and interested public are invited to attend. For additional information visit www.edmondsfriends.org.

Horticulture scholarships available

The Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a 2009 high school graduate, community college student, or individual planning a career in a horticultural field.

The deadline for all applications is May 6.

The applicant will be selected based on the following criteria:

•Interest in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany. forestry, or a related field.

•Financial need

•Legal residency

•A 3.25 grade point or higher

•Activities and achievements in school and community.

The recipient may attend any community college, college or university in Washington.

Red Cross offers training scholarships

The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering scholarships for health and safety training to active duty members of the Armed Forces, reservists, National Guard personnel and veterans, including family members in all categories.

Courses available for free tuition are first aid, adult CPR/AED, infant/child CPR, HIV/AIDS, and babysitter training.

Bev Walker, chapter Service to the Armed Forces director, advises that a limited number of scholarship vouchers will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Funding for the program is from a grant from the Department of Defense.

To qualify, applicants must be assigned to a military unit located in Snohomish County or be a resident of the county. Proof of military status or relationship to the military member is required. Courses must be completed by May 31. The offering will end earlier if grant funds become depleted.

Vouchers must be presented on the first day of training, but registration for a course should be made early due to class enrollment limitations. All classes will be held at the Red Cross Chapter, 2530 Lombard Ave. in Everett.

Flags wanted for Memorial Day

The Edmonds Cemetery Board plans to honor the U.S. Navy SEABEES at the 2009 Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25.

A remembrance for Marvin G. Shields, the SEABEES only Medal of Honor recipient and Washington state native will be included in the program.

The Edmonds Cemetery Board seeks the loan of two or three U.S. flags given to the families of SEABEE veterans for use in the ceremony.
