MONROE — Shane McDivitt’s collision with Will Jacques in the final minute of Tuesday’s Wesco North boys soccer game opened up large gashes on both players. Good thing for Monroe, McDivitt had scored the game’s decisive goal 30 seconds earlier, giving the Bearcats a 3-2 win over Lake Stevens.

Monroe coach Ryan Schaeffer said that McDivitt and Jacques collided heads, but said the challenge was clean on the part of both players. Schaeffer thought the cut might keep McDivitt out of a few of Monroe’s upcoming games, but wasn’t sure.

According to Schaeffer, just 30 seconds earlier, McDivitt ripped a 25-yard shot for the game-winning goal.

“He just crushed it upper ‘V’ right post,” Schaeffer said. “It was a dream shot.”

The game was a back-and-forth battle all evening. Lake Stevens got on the board first in the second minute on a Scotty DeOliveira shot. Monroe got goals from Jack Fortune in the 15th minute and Drew Hopkins (Seth Creager assist) in the 27th minute, to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Lake Stevens knotted the game in the 44th minute on a Zach Muth shot.

“Right off the whistle they just killed us,” Schaeffer said referring to the goal just after halftime. “When you give a good team like that space, they will take advantage.”

Schaeffer also credited Hopkins, whom the team refers to as “no touch” for his breakaway ability, for being an offensive leader. Hopkins has 28 breakaways on the season, but Schaeffer is quick to jokingly point out that he has just two goals.

Michael Pierce was in goal for Lake Stevens (6-5-0 league, 6-5-0 overall), as was Miles Garman for Monroe (6-4-0, 6-4-0).

Schaeffer said if it wasn’t for a few of Pierce’s saves the game could have been much different.

Pierce had 14 saves, including two on Hopkins’ breakaways.
