Baseball roundup: Lavelle does it all for Lake Stevens
Published 11:20 am Thursday, April 23, 2009
STANWOOD — Dylan Lavelle is just a freshman, but he doesn’t play like one.
Lavelle allowed no hits in the first five innings and hit two home runs, including a game-winning two-run homer in the eighth inning as Lake Stevens beat Stanwood 4-2 on Wednesday in a Wesco North baseball game.
“You’ve got to tip your hat to Lavelle, he pitched a wonderful game and helped himself out at the plate,” Stanwood head coach Tony Wolden said. “It was just a wonderful effort on his part.”
Lavelle, who batted 2-for-4 with three RBI, was the winning pitcher, striking out four and allowing just three hits.
Stanwood’s Michael McCune broke up Lavelle’s no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“I hope we see that a lot more from him over the next three years,” Lake Stevens head coach Rodger Anderson said. “He really has a lot of poise.”
The game was important to both teams, Stanwood sits in fourth place in the Wesco South, while Lake Stevens sits in fifth.
“Tonight’s loss doesn’t help us, but we still control our own destiny,” Wolden said.
