DUVALL — Archbishop Murphy kept its perfect baseball record intact, and clinched the Cascade Conference championship with a 12-7 win over second-place Cedarcrest on Monday at Tolt Middle School.

Murphy is now 18-0 overall, and 16-0 in the Cascade Conference. Cedarcrest is 14-3 overall, and 13-3 in the Cascade Conference. Both teams have secured playoff berths in the Class 2A District 1 tournament.

“There is nothing that indicates (this has happened before) as far as we know,” Murphy head coach Stan Taloff said of clinching the conference.

Wildcats starter Kevin Waldron pitched five innings, giving up two runs and keeping Cedarcrest from scoring multiple runs when it had the opportunity.

“He stranded five or six runners,” Taloff said. “A pretty classy performance.”

Jake Hines hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead, but the Red Wolves came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit.

Taloff said the key to the game was clutch hits, including Evan Howard’s bases-loaded double in top of seventh inning that scored three runs, giving Murphy a 12-3 lead.

Cedarcrest’s answer was not enough, with the Wolves putting up four runs up in the bottom of the seventh. Cameron Padron batted 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in for Cedarcrest, and Craig Chittenden batted 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI.
