M’s grab another unwanted player: Jerry Owens

For the second time in two days, the Mariners have grabbed a player off the waiver wire. Saturday, it was pitcher Steven Shell, who was ditched by the Washington Nationals.

Today, the Mariners signed outfielder Jerry Owens, two days after he was designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox. Owens declined his assignment to the minor leagues and elected to become a free agent, and the Mariners grabbed him.

The left-handed-hitting Owens had one hit in a dozen at-bats this season with the White Sox. His best season was 2007 when he played 93 games and batted .267 and led major league rookies with 32 steals with the White Sox.

Owens will join the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers on Monday.
