Ashes, ashes

Well done: Area fire officials are warning people to take precautions as they fire up their backyard grills for the start of barbecue season.

Here’s a little exercise to see how well your friends fared over the holiday weekend: Tomorrow morning, check to see which of the men you work with still have eyebrows.

Beats “Sweet Caroline”: Seattle rock historian Peter Blecha will discuss the intriguing if unintelligible history of the Kingsmen’s Northwest rock classic “Louie, Louie” during a free presentation and book signing Sunday at the Everett Public Library.

The Seattle Mariners play “Louie, Louie” after “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch, which always struck us as an apt selection. After a couple of beers, the refrain of “me gotta go” is a helpful reminder.

Who let the dogs out? The city of San Diego says it plans to use recordings of barking dogs to chase away about 200 seals that congregate at a beach at a cost of $700,000 a year. If that fails, the city plans to spray the seals with water (Page A2).

We’d like to remind the San Diego officials of two little facts they may have overlooked: First, seals also make a barking sound. Second, seals spend much of their day splashing about in water.
