Edmonds-Woodway hires two new coaches

Edmonds-Woodway High School has hired head coaches for two of its winter sports teams.

The Warriors’ new girls basketball coach is Duane Hodges, a 1973 graduate of Bothell High who played hoops at Central Washington University. The school’s new wrestling coach is Joe Trieu, who wrestled at E-W, qualified for the state championships four times and graduated in 2003. Edmonds-Woodway athletic director Julie Stroncek announced the hirings Tuesday.

Hodges, 54, previously coached basketball at King’s, Snohomish County Christian and Shoreline Christian, where he was the girls head coach this past season. Hodges replaces Wayne Edwards, who resigned after two seasons as E-W’s interim head coach.

Following a strong 2008-09 season, the Warriors girls basketball team is expected to be very competitive next season. The squad should return several experienced players, including forward Angela Woods, an All-Wesco South first team pick as a sophomore.

“I’m really looking forward to coaching the girls that are returning from last year’s varsity team,” Hodges said.

Last season E-W went 17-6. It earned a share of the Western Conference South Division title and won a game at the Class 4A District 1 tournament.

When the E-W coaching job opened a few years ago, Hodges considered applying for it but ultimately did not. “But when it became available again,” he said, “it seemed like it was a great opportunity to coach at a real good local high school that has an up-and-coming program.”

Hodges, who has been coaching E-W in its summer league, was already familiar with Woods, the Warriors’ all-league first team performer. He was an assistant coach at Shoreline Christian when Woods played there as a freshman, before she transferred to E-W.

Trieu, Edmonds-Woodway’s new head wrestling coach, was a Warriors assistant coach the past two years and was previously head coach at College Place Middle School. Trieu takes over for Mike Hanchett, who resigned after coaching 29 years in Edmonds.

E-W won the 2009 Wesco South dual-meet title, placed third at the district meet and sent six grapplers to the Mat Classic state championships.

“The kids are excited and I think we’re on the right track. The biggest thing is to try to develop these guys holistically,” said Trieu, referring to his goal of molding well-rounded student-athletes. Trieu said he wants them to train hard, study hard and learn the importance of respect and honesty.

E-W is expected to bring back three wrestlers who qualified for state as sophomores this past season: Andrew Vulliet, Mac Hutchison and Ryan Deweese. Vulliet placed sixth in the 103-pound division.

Kingma named all-star of Franklin tournament

Brett Kingma, a guard on the Jackson High boys basketball team, was named a Tournament All Star at the Quaker Summer Slam, held June 5-7 at Franklin High in Seattle. Kingma averaged 21.3 points per game, tied for fourth-best in the tournament. Jackson went 1-3 and finished 27th in the talent-rich 32-team field.
