Prep Roundup: Cascade boys take first at Edmonds Invite

EDMONDS — The Cascade boys cross country team put together a strong showing with a first-place finish at the season-opening Edmonds Invitational Saturday morning at Edmonds District Stadium.
The Bruins top seven runners, competing in separate flights throughout the morning, ran well enough to beat runner-up Lake Stevens by 1 minute, 5 seconds with a winning time of 59:44.
Senior Dylan Hopper and junior Aaron Campell finished with the third and fourth fastest times of the overall competition — Campbell winning the sixth flight in 11:25 and Hopper placing third in the seventh flight in 11:22.
Cascade dominated the earlier flights with junior Sascha Noack (12:42) winning the first flight and sophomore Steven Statham (12:21), senior Keanan Sands (12:22), sophomore Aaron Bartee (12:51) and senior Alex Bartee (12:09) all finishing in the top three spots of the remaining flights on the 2.2-mile course.
Kamiak’s Bryton Reim (11:11) and Meadowdale’s Matt Crichlow (11:16) had the first and second fastest times of the day for the boys race.
Edmonds-Woodway (72:36) edged out Kamiak (73:26) for first-place on the girls side.
Junior Betsie Hopper (13:37) won her heat and Amia Nash (13:42) and Amy Fair (14:58) placed second in their respective heats to lead the Warriors to the team title.
Senior Samantha Minor of Lake Stevens ran the fastest girls time of the day, finishing the course in 13:22.
Silverwood Invite: At Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, the Glacier Peak boys and girls teams both took first place overall at a meet that involved 30 other teams. The Glacier Peak boys won with 121 points, beating Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, Ore.) who finished second with 134 points. Jeff Bastian finished second in 16 minutes, 13 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. The Grizzlies girls had five runners place in the top nine overall and won with 28 points, besting Meridian (Idaho) who placed second with 110 points. Amy-Eloise Neale finished first overall in 18:05.
Mt. Tahoma Relays: At Tacoma, Cedarcrest and King’s had a number of high-ranking finishers in the 3,000-meter relays. Missy Dowd (12:10) placed second in the girls race with teammates Cara Strodel (12:19) took fourth and Brenna Eldredge (12:21) was fifth overall. Jessica Beam (12:47) finished in 11th place. Cedarcrest boys Mitchell Montgomery (10:45) and Lucas Vrbka (10:46) placed 10th and 11th overall. King’s also had good finishes from Harris Emmons (10:32, ninth in the boys race) and Adele Eslinger (12:30, seventh place), Morgan Hamm (12:32, eighth place) and Emma Barr (12:43, ninth place) in the girls race.
Bellarmine Invite: At Tacoma, Shorewood’s Erin Johnson placed seventh overall in the two-mile girls varsity race with a time of 12 minutes, 36.10 seconds.
Volleyball
Yakima Volleyball Festival: At Yakima, Glacier Peak finished tied for 11th place out of 31 teams. The Grizzlies beat Sedro-Woolley 25-20, 25-14; split with Oak Harbor 25-20, 26-27 and lost to Grandview 25-12, 25-18 en route to a second place finish in tournament pool play. In playoff competition, Glacier Peak beat North Kitsap 25-18, 15-25, 15-10, but lost to West Valley (Yakima) 28-26, 20-25, 15-4 to end the tournament.
Mount Vernon Christian 3, North Sound Christian 2: At Mountlake Terrace, Catherine Oakland had 12 digs and five service aces, but North Sound Christian fell 25-16, 23-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-11 in a nonconference match. Maylisa Chung added 28 assists, 10 kills, eight digs and four service aces for North Sound Christian (2-1 overall).
Interlake 2, South Whidbey 1: At Langley, Jessica Manca scored on a 30-yard free kick in the 60th minute for South Whidbey, but Interlake took home the win in a nonconference match. Natasha Kamps was the goalkeeper for South Whidbey (1-1 overall).
Girls soccer
Granite Falls 12, Concrete 0: At Granite Falls, Alisha Amenston and Katie Cashman scored four goals each for Granite Falls (2-0 overall) in a nonconference win. Cacia Stevens scored two goals and Katyann Powers also scored two goals for the Tigers. Kelsey Carlson and Courtney Ford shared time in goal for Granite Falls.
Football
Coupeville 7, Lakeside 6: At Seattle, Justin Adams gave Coupeville a nonconference win with a 5-yard run in the third quarter. Coupeville’s record is now 2-0 overall.

Darrington 34, Lake Stevens sophomores 24: At Darrington, Robert Gillette scored a pair of touchdowns on reverse plays to lead the Loggers to the non-league win. Colton Palmer led Darrington rushers with 109 yards on 17 carries and one TD. Quarterback JohnnyLoughan scored on a 20-yard sweep play and Adam Carter ran for a 5-yard touchdown for the Loggers (2-0).
