Wesco 3A Football Preview

Published 8:29 am Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Here’s a look at the Western Conference’s 3A Division, with the teams listed in the coaches’ order of predicted finish:

GLACIER PEAK

Last season: 3-1 in conference play, 5-5 overall

Outlook

Returning every starter from their inaugural team, the experienced Grizzlies hope to ride their fast-paced spread offense deep into the state playoffs. Glacier Peak returns three players who had at least 450 yards receiving in 2008. Expect even more from them and dangerous QB Zach Richter, who is stronger and more comfortable running the show.

MEADOWDALE

Last season: 3-1, 6-4

Outlook

New quarterback Danny McDonald, a scrambler, is surrounded by two of the area’s top skill players: 2008 all-league first-team running back Naji Moore-Taylor and 6-7 tight end Connor Hamlett. Another plus: elusive RB Sam Werner is back after a foot injury ruined his junior season. If the Mavs’ inexperienced linemen step up, the team should contend in tough early-season, non-league games against Edmonds-Woodway and Stanwood.

Impact Players

EVERETT

Last season: 2-2, 5-5

Outlook

A second-year starting quarterback, Chase Herrick is a threat to throw and run. The 2008 all-league second-team QB will play defense for the first time, as a safety. The Seagulls will need contributions from quite a few young players. Fortunately, they have time to adjust to varsity action — Everett doesn’t play a league foe until week five.

SHORECREST

Last season: 2-2, 4-6

Outlook

Not having two-way all-league first-team player Michael Harris, who quit football to focus on soccer, hurts. But the Scots still have talent, including back Jordan Brown (542 yards rushing and six touchdowns in 2008). After moving former quarterback Sam Heck to receiver, Scots coach Mike Wollan will consider two players for the QB spot: junior Michael Johnson and sophomore Ted Hammond. Both of them proved they are capable, Wollan said.

LYNNWOOD

Last season: 0-4, 0-10

Outlook

Although it lacks size and depth, Lynnwood has exciting skill players, spearheaded by transfer running back Typhis Cochran. Can Cochran, who previously attended the same California high school Reggie Bush went to, lead the Royals to a long-sought win? The Royals might also benefit from the excitement surrounding the opening of their impressive new campus.
