PREP TENNIS/SWIMMING ROUNDUP: Doubles victories propel Kamiak

Published 9:18 am Wednesday, October 7, 2009

LYNNWOOD — Two is better than one.

The Kamiak boys tennis team defeated Wesco South rival Meadowdale 5-2 thanks to some spectacular doubles play that head coach Victor Alinen praised continuously.

“Our number two and number three doubles teams play really well, and they’re what secured the win for us,” Alinen said.

While those two teams secured victories to improve the Knights’ team score, Meadowdale won the number one battle that Alinen said was definitely the “best match” of the night.

Scott Bohmke, who usually plays no. 1 singles, switched to doubles with Grant Lovell and defeated the Kamiak duo of Brian Ko and David Kim 6-3, 7-5. Alinen said playing against such a great opponent provided really good tennis and really improved his teams’ game.

“My kids, Brian Ko and David Kim, were hitting as well as I’ve ever seen them play doubles,” Alinen said. “It was the best doubles match I’ve ever seen my guys play.”

The match was the last one to end, after Kamiak had already secured the victory leading 5-1. But both teams still came over to watch and cheer for the final match of the day.

“Both teams were there cheering on their guys,” Alinen said, “and it was a really fun battle.”

Alinen then went into strategy, saying that Bohmke played doubles because a lot of coaches “double-down,” or pair their star singles players as a doubles team so they can get into the district and state tournaments.

“(Coaches) take their best players and place them were they think they have the best chance of qualifying for the district tournament,” Alinen said. “And that’s what (Meadowdale head coach) Mark (Schneider) did with Scott. And it was a good move. When teams go to state its usually two singles players that have combined for a team.”

Kamiak now looks forward to facing conference foe Jackson, which is a perfect 6-0 in league play and 13-0 overall, on Thursday at Kamiak High School.

“They’re coming to our place,” Alinen said. “If we beat them we are tied.”
