PREP ROUNDUP: Edmonds-Woodway rallies for volleyball win over Scots

Published 9:37 am Thursday, October 8, 2009

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway came out a little too excited for it’s Wesco South volleyball showdown with Shorecrest Wednesday night, but senior setter Leigh Fishback helped settle the Warriors as E-W beat the Scots 3-1 at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

The Warriors (2-1 league, 6-2 overall) dropped the first game, but rallied for a 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-14 win behind Fishback’s 45 assists and nine digs and freshman outside hitter Miah Diirell’s second consecutive strong match.

“We came out a little bit too pumped up and we had five service errors and seven hitting errors in that first game,” E-W head coach Mike Pittis said. “We had to back down a little and get a comfortable level of intensity.”

E-W did just that as Diirell tallied 16 kills and 17 digs, senior Hannah Lauber added eight kills, six blocks and 10 digs and junior Ashley Kelly-Norling recorded 10 kills and 10 digs.

Diirell added to an impressive performance Monday night versus Shorewood when she led the Warriors with 17 kills and 10 digs — the freshman has 33 kills and 27 digs over the last two contests.

“She’s had two real good ones back-to-back,” Pittis said. “She’s probably hitting .350 or .360 in the last two games.”

After the rocky start, Fishback helped maintain a good tempo with strong passing from the middle, creating what Pittis said was one of his squad’s better matches of the season.

“(E-W) came back (following the first game) and probably played our steadiest match so far,” Pittis said. “(Fishback) was really doing a nice job tonight, we’ve been trying to get our middles more involved and she was doing a nice job of distributing the ball.”

Elisa Ahern had nine kills and two blocks for Shorecrest (1-2, 3-5) and Lauren Schilperoort added seven kills and 16 digs. Casey Axelson also had 26 assists and eight digs for the Scots.

Jackson 3, Mariner 0: At Everett, Jackson’s Kristin Stoffel had three aces and four kills, Christy Cain had eight kills and two blocks and Haley MacDonald had 26 assists and five kills in Jackson’s Wesco South win. Set scores were not reported. Jackson is now 2-1 in league, 7-2 overall. Mariner’s Katelyn Kelly had 25 digs. Mariner is now 0-3, 0-8.

Kamiak 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, Bryce Larson had 24 kills, Ally Bowles had 33 assists, Goli Soleimanpour had 13 digs and Jazmyne Dodd had seven kills in the Knights’ (3-0 league, 7-1 overall) 25-15, 25-16, 25-23 Wesco South win. Shorewood (1-2, 3-5) was led by Hannah Stoeve’s 11 kills, Carolyn Stransky’s 11 assists, Dana Brindle’s 13 digs and Laura Postor’s 12 digs.
