PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Edmonds-Woodway notches much-needed league win
Published 10:19 am Saturday, October 10, 2009
EVERETT — Going into Friday night’s Wesco South game against Mariner, Edmonds-Woodway had yet to win a league game and was in great danger of being eliminated from any postseason hopes. With a 32-27 victory the Warriors leapfrogged Mariner and stayed alive in the race for the postseason.
“We lose we’re done. We just needed a little confidence,” Edmonds-Woodway coach John Gradwohl said. “To get a win for us right now is huge.”
Edmonds-Woodway’s Jimmy Spears rushed for a 156 yards on 17 carries with one touchdown, but that touchdown couldn’t have been any more important, scoring with just over a minute remaining to put Edmonds-Woodway ahead for good.
“He really lit a fire under our offense when we needed it,” Gradwohl said.
Mariner rushed for 287 yards to Edmonds-Woodway’s 205, but Edmonds-Woodway had 263 yards passing to Mariner’s 84.
In total, Edmonds-Woodway had 468 yards of total offense.
“To have almost 500 yards total, you can’t deny the offensive line did some good things,” Gradwohl said.
Edmonds-Woodway quarterback Andy Willcock completed 12 of his 21 passes for 263 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Willcock also had two 1-yard rushing touchdowns.
Mariner’s KeiVarae Russell ran for 108 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. Matt Rae also ran for 80 yards on 10 carries for the Marauders.
“That No. 5 (Russell) is a player man, geez louise,” Gradwohl said.
Gradwohl said every time the Warriors and the Marauders get together it’s a battle.
“I don’t care what their record is, it’s always a challenge,” Gradwohl said.
