Lake Stevens: Chili cook-off to benefit family center

A chili cook-off to benefit the Lake Stevens Family Center is planned as part of the city’s Halloween celebration downtown Oct. 31.

Anyone may enter the cook-off for a $10 fee by registering at the Lake Stevens Family Center, 1803 123rd Drive NE.

A panel of judges will sample the entries and award prizes in several categories. People who are downtown for the Family Safe Halloween event also will be able to vote for a “people’s choice” favorite by sampling all entries for $1.

Businesses may act as sponsors for a donation of $100, with a deadline of Oct. 23. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Family Center’s efforts to help low-income people during the holidays.

Give coupons for military families

Anyone may bring manufacturers’ coupons to the Lake Stevens Family Center for distribution to military families.

Volunteers at the nonprofit family center will clip and sort the coupons for the American Legion. Legionnaires then will send the coupons to troops around the world to use in military commissaries.

Expired coupons are acceptable but store-specific coupons are not. Local coupons such as dining or entertaining discounts may be donated for service members at Naval Station Everett.

The Lake Stevens Family Center is at 1803 123rd Drive NE.
