PREP ROUNDUP: Jackson captures South title

LYNNWOOD — In tennis, grit and determination are usually factors on the court, but for the Meadowdale and Jackson boys tennis teams, they were required just to get to the court.
After their Wesco South match had been postponed by rain last week, the two teams decided to play it Tuesday even though the league tournament begins today. Jackson prevailed 5-2 to finish the season with a perfect record at 9-0 in league, 16-0 overall and win the league dual meet championship.
“Its really difficult to go a full week without playing, it rained all week long.” Jackson head coach David Hutt said. “I have never had a perfect season in the 12 years I have coached and the kids were asking me about 10 games into the season if Jackson had ever been undefeated … the kids wanted to play this match to have closure on their season.”
The incredible season was credited to depth and senior leadership by the Timberwolves, with Hutt noting that there are three matches a week and anything ranging from sickness and injuries to rainouts can alter a season at anytime.
Jackson’s Kevin Law had a highlighted comeback, losing the first set 6-7 (5-7), but came back to win 7-5, 6-3 over Danak Tews.
Jackson’s Mitch Williamson— who will have a first-round bye in today’s divisional meet as the Wesco South’s No.1 seed — was unable to continue in the match during the second set and defaulted to Alex Casper.
Kevin Taylor, who played No.3 singles all season, will be Jackson’s second singles entry in the league meet. The tandems of Robin Choi-David Kim and Rodrick Pence-Bruno Manfredi will represent Jackson as the doubles teams in the divisional playoffs.
“I’m not trying to be arrogant, but I think they should all win in the playoffs,” Hutt said. “Mitch has stood above everybody and should move on to the finals, but once you get to districts crazy things happen.”
