PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Cascade stages comeback win over Lynnwood

Published 11:40 pm Tuesday, December 29, 2009

EVERETT — Cascade fell behind early but rallied late to win its sixth-straight contest in a non-league Wesco showdown with Lynnwood 60-56.

Prior to the game Simi Fajemisin, a University of San Diego recruit and 6-foot-10 center looked to be the primary challenge for the Bruins, whose lineup boasts not a single player taller than 6-foot-3.

Fajemsin had a team-high 20 points but Cascade held him in check with a steady diet of Jordan Garrett and Jameson McDaniels on the defensive end. McDaniels had 10 of Cascade’s 25 rebounds.

“In the first half he got some really good looks,” Cascade coach Jamar Williams said. “I was impressed with how we played against a guy like that.”

Lynnwood led by five points midway through the third quarter when Fajemsin picked up his fourth foul and Cascade took advantage.

Chris McGrath led all scorers with 21 points for the Bruins and two of his three steals came in a crucial stretch of the fourth quarter when Cascade sealed the victory.

“He did a great job of being patient in the first half when the opportunities weren’t there,” Williams said of his senior guard, who is averaging 18.7 points per game.

Going into the game, Cascade was averaging 72 points per contest. With just 27 points at halftime, it was clear the Bruins would need to play a different style than they were accustomed to. The fact that they did gives Cascade’s third-year coach confidence heading into the Wesco North season which resumes Tuesday night at Lake Stevens in a battle of league-play unbeatens.

“We’re used to scoring in the 70s.That’s a low-scoring game for us,” Williams said. “We realized that we can play both styles in close games like that.”
