Prep Roundup: Wesco teams do well at big boys swim meet

FEDERAL WAY — Some of the best swim teams in the state competed in the Kentridge Invitational Saturday morning, and the participating Wesco squads showed plenty of muscle, placing five teams in top 11.

Mercer Island swam away from the 38-team competition, netting 829.5 points, nearly double runner-up Kamiak (415.5).

The Knights were led by senior Mitchell Wright, who placed second in diving. Although Kamiak did not win any single event, it amassed plenty points across the board en route to their second-place finish.

Marysville-Pilchuck placed sixth with 312.5 points. Oliver Durand scored 54 points on his own with 2nd-place finishes in the 200 IM and 500-yard freestyle, while senior Zach Russell won the diving event with 207.5 points for the Tommies.

Junior Mackey Hopen helped propel Shorewood to eighth place with a win in the 100-yard butterfly and a second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Fellow Thunderbird Thor Stenfjord finished second in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles.

Snohomish powerhouse Garren Riechel scored 60 of the Panthers’ 91 points, touching the wall first in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.

Lake Stevens and Oak Harbor also had successful meets, placing 10th and 11th to round out an impressive day for Wesco.

Junior Blake Peterson had a double-double, with 10 points and 12 rebounds for Arlington. Blair Bomber led all Lion scorers with 13 points.

Wilcox’s 19 points led Coupeville. Teammate Hunter Hammer chipped in with 14 and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Daniel Cheledinas led King’s with 24 points.

Garrett Weinberg scored 19 points to lead Grace, including all 14 of the team’s points in the first half. Andrew Wolf had 15 points to lead Mt. Rainier Lutheran.

Joclyn Kirton (13 points) and Karlie Storkson (11) led the Knights’ offense.

Senior JV Daniel Hinckley (215 pounds) won all four of his matches by pin, and fellow Tommies Brandon Blezins (125 pounds), Luke Shumaker (135) and Brian Donaldson (145) also went unbeaten.

Everett Invitational: At Everett, Everett High School beat 20 other teams to win their tournament. The Seagulls scored 230 points and had champions in three weight classes; Jessie Lopez at 103 pounds, Jack Forrest at 125 and Jerry Contreras at 160. Of the local teams, Lake Stevens placed third, Oak Harbor eighth, Lynnwood 18th, Cascade 19th and Arlington 20th.
