You don’t mess with the Keebler Elves: Looking to fill a budget cavity, lawmakers in Olympia have proposed a tax on candy and gum that could bring in millions each year to the state budget. But one bill would make an exemption for sweets containing flour.
No doubt, the lobbyists from Big Cookie were leaning on lawmakers to exempt their products, but you can expect candymakers to get around the new tax by “fortifying” candy bars with “the wholesome goodness of white refined flour.”
Now, hold still: The director of the U.S. Census Bureau started the 2010 count by visiting a remote Eskimo village in Alaska’s north and interviewing its eldest resident.
The Alaskan native confirmed that he can see Russia from his place, but you have to stand on top of a polar bear for the best view.
And no staples in the centerfold: Anticipation is growing for Apple Inc.’s expectedunveiling Wednesday of its new tablet computer. Along with books, the tablet may be able to display electronic versions of newspapers and magazines.
The Buzz plans to stick with old-fashioned periodicals for a while but will concede one advantage of a tablet reader: not having to bend over and pick up the subscription cards that flutter out of magazines.
