PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: McGrath leads Cascade boys to key win
Published 10:49 pm Tuesday, January 26, 2010
SNOHOMISH — Chris McGrath scored 22 points in the second half and hit a game-winning runner with 10 seconds remaining to lift Cascade to a 62-60 Western Conference North Division win over Snohomish Tuesday night at Snohomish High School.
McGrath, a 6-foot-3 senior for the Bruins, connected on a running shot with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter and was fouled. McGrath sank the free throw and Cascade (8-3 league, 10-5 overall) held off Snohomish (8-4, 9-7) in the final seconds.
“He was just breaking guys down,” Snohomish head coach Len Bone said of McGrath. “Pulling up and shooting over them.”
McGrath scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and 12 in the third.
Jamieson McDaniels, a 6-2 senior, pitched in 13 points for Cascade, including nine in the second half.
Snohomish was led by Trevor Carlson’s 3-point touch. Carlson, a 6-3 junior, made six 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 20 points.
Jon McGee added 10 points for the Panthers, who trailed Cascade by five entering the fourth quarter.
The win gives Cascade a 2-0 records against Snohomish and a leg up in the battle for third place in the Wesco North standings.
“They beat us twice,” Bone said. “But there are still four games to go, so we’ve got to get better.”
