FIRE DISTRICT 1

Edmonds fires damage home

A bedroom fire caused $20,000 damage to a condominium in Edmonds Feb. 4, displacing the three people who lived there.

No one was inside the townhouse unit in the 7800 block of 196th Street Southwest at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

The owner called 911 at 11:11 a.m. when she returned home from work to find her townhouse filled with smoke.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, but there was smoke damage throughout the second floor of the townhouse. The homeowner has insurance.

Investigators believe combustibles placed too close to an electric wall heater likely sparked the fire. They ruled the blaze accidental.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen quite a few fires this winter that started the same way. All combustible items such as papers, books, furniture, curtains and clothing should be at least 3 feet away from electric in-wall and baseboard heaters,” said Leslie Hynes, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman.

Fire kills dog

A small dog died in a fire that caused more than $100,000 damage to an Edmonds home Feb. 2.

A neighbor called 911 at 12:18 p.m. to report smoke coming from the eaves of a house in the 22100 block of 88th Avenue West. No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Firefighters were able to contain most of the fire damage to the kitchen area and attic space above. The fire left the house uninhabitable and displaced three adults. The homeowners have insurance.

Snohomish County fire marshal’s investigators determined the fire started accidentally because the burner control on the stove may have been inadvertently bumped into a lighted position, Hynes said.

“To prevent fires, keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop even when it’s not in use,” Hynes said.

Haiti relief help

The locally based International Medical Assistance Team has deployed a second group of six medical professionals to provide aid in Haiti. This group included two paramedics from Snohomish County Fire District 1 who deployed on their own, as members of IMAT.

IMAT is currently looking for doctors, nurses and paramedics interested in a deployment of approximately two weeks, to relieve a team working at a medical base in Port Au Prince. Contact Chris Tompkins, a Fire District 1 paramedic who heads IMAT, for more information at internationalmedicalassistance@gmail.com.

The group also has a Web site: www.imateam.org.
