SHORELINE — Leading by three points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Shorewood held on for the must-win victory against Oak Harbor on Friday at Shorewood High School and advanced to the 4A District 1 playoffs.
After going back and forth for much of the third and fourth quarters, Shorewood broke away after freshman Masha Shtikel connected on a lay-in, was fouled and made the free throw. The Thunderbirds shot 5-for-7 from the line in the last quarter after Oak Harbor had tied the score with three minutes remaining.
“Every possession was important,” said Shorewood coach Nina Lowe.
Taylor Nephew scored a team-high 17 points, had 14 rebounds and hit two clutch free throws in the fourth quarter. Shtikel added 15 points.
Oak Harbor was led by Nicole Mowbray with 24 points.
Shorewood enters the district tournament as the number four Wesco South seed and plays Monroe on Tuesday. Oak Harbor’s season ended with the loss.
“It was a great game by all of the team,” said Lowe. “It was definitely a team effort.”
