HONORS

Marcus Whitman DAR honors contest winners

The Daughters of American Revolution, Marcus Whitman Chapter of Everett held its regular meeting on Feb. 13.

During the meeting, the top three winners of the annual DAR American History Essay Contest were honored with medals and award certificates.

The three winners were sixth-graders from Northshore Christian Academy in Everett. Vice Principal Michael Thornton introduced the first-place winner Kathryn Anderson, second-place winner Anna Lank and third-place winner Nikki Traversie.

Each student received their awards and medals, introduced their parents and read their winning essays about this year’s subject: “How did you feel when the final Golden Spike was hammered into the Transcontinental Railroad, bringing this great nation together?”

The Outstanding American History Teacher of the Year winner for the Everett chapter was Kathryn Vaughn of Our Lady of the Lake Parish School in Seattle. Vaughn’s nomination has been submitted to the state DAR committee for further consideration.

Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln were also recognized during the meeting with artifacts on loan from vice regent Candy Thoreson. The artifacts included Lincoln’s photo, a rifle dated 1856, a six-volume set of books entitled “Abraham Lincoln” by Carl Sandberg, pedigree charts on both Lincoln and his wife, and figurines dressed in period costumes.

Edmonds Cub Scout earns leadership award

Veterans of Foreign Wars Lynnwood Post 1040 post commander Martin Spani recently presented the Scouting Spirit Award to Cub Scout Ian McGaughey of Edmonds.

The award was given to Ian on Feb. 20 during the Boy Scouts of America Pack 331 Blue and Gold Banquet at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood.

The award is presented annually to the Cub Scout who has provided strong leadership skills and demonstrated an outstanding character throughout the year.

Snohomish Chamber of Commerce issues awards

The Snohomish Chamber of Commerce 2009 annual Awards and Recognition luncheon was held on Feb. 16 at the Cabbage Patch Restaurant in Snohomish.

The following awards were presented by 2009 President Sue Sullivan:

Chamber Volunteer of the Year: Carol Bell, manager at Peoples Bank

Community Service Award: Marcie Owens, director of Snohomish Boys &Girls Club

Spirit of Snohomish: Debbie Emge, economic development manager for the city of Snohomish

Future Community Leaders: Girl Scouts Troop 392

Outstanding Group Leader: Carol Robinson, Girls Scout Troop 392

Special Appreciation: Karen Charnell, retired director of the Snohomish Senior Center

During the luncheon, John Morton of Snohomish County Search and Rescue was awarded a $1,000 donation from the 2009 Greatest Pumpkin River Race proceeds.

Pam Osborne, manager of the Snohomish Chamber, gave a special thank you to Darlene Daggett, who has been a weekly volunteer at the chamber office. Ray Cook, the 2009 chairman of the Snohomish Classic Car and Hot Rod Display announced that a special award will also be presented to Les Schwab Tire Centers, in appreciation of their continued support as the main sponsor of this annual chamber fundraising event.

Snohomish Conservation District lists 2009 awards

Snohomish Conservation District recently announced the recipients of their annual awards for 2009.

The Conservation District recognizes individuals who have significantly improved water quality and natural resource management on their farms and rural acreages, according to Bobbi Lindemulder, interim manager for the district.

“These landowners have made outstanding progress in protecting and restoring natural resources, improving farm management, and in their commitment to promoting district educational events,” she said.

The awards were handed out at the annual Conservation District Open House held on Feb. 11. Winners included:

Dairy Farm of the Year: Giles Dairy, Pat and Kary Michaelis of Arlington

Merit Farms: Elizabeth Mitchell of Edmonds; Bakers Back Acres, Gary and Darcy Baker of Lake Stevens; Howling Coyote Ranch, Gerald, Laura and Makaila Boyce of Lake Stevens

Partnership Awards: Whidbey Island Conservation District in Coupeville; Clare Flanagan, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service in Renton

Volunteer Awards: WSU Livestock Advisors, Snohomish County; WSU Master Gardeners, Snohomish County

Teacher of the Year: Ryan Ovenell, Stanwood High School

Four Length of Service awards were presented to District employees Julie Allen, Alan Shank, Ryan Bartelheimer and Lois Ruskell. District Chair Duane Weston also recognized Bobbi Lindemulder for her outstanding service as interim district manager. The district Web site is www.snohomishcd.org.

GIVING

High School jazz band plays for Masons’ ladies

Ladies Night at Arlington’s Masonic Lodge 129 on Feb. 13 featured a guest performance by Arlington High School’s jazz band, On Hold, directed by John Grabowski.

On Hold group members include: Josiah Aylesworth, Brad Boatman, Luke Chase, Andrew Clark, James Clark, Tucker DeGraffenreid, John Grabowski, Tesia Lingenfelter, Hayden Love, Eric McElroy, Marissa Meyrick, Daniel Murray, Nathaniel Ries, Evan Robertson, Tyler Sallee, Kyle Smith, David Taft-Farren, Marty Thordarson, Chris Vaughan and Josh Vaughan.

Rotary’s $1,000 donation helps get beds for kids

The South Everett Mukilteo Rotary Club recently donated $1,000 to the St. Vincent de Paul Beds for Children Program.

The program is offered to St. Vincent de Paul clients and funded by grants from foundations, clubs and other agencies.

In 2009, 500 beds were given to children through the program. Recipients of the beds also receive sheets, blankets and a pillow.
