Auburn-Riverside beats Edmonds-Woodway girls 51-39

TACOMA— Junior Kathleen Cooper scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Auburn Riverside overcame a sluggish start to beat Edmonds-Woodway 51-39 Wednesday in a first-round game at the Class 4A girls basketball tournament.

The undefeated Ravens (26-0) trailed 10-5 after one quarter and 24-20 at the half before outscoring Edmonds-Woodway 17-5 in the third quarter to take the lead for good. University of Washington-bound Mercedes Wetmore chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for the Ravens. The 6-foot Cooper was 8 of 15 from the field.

The Warriors (22-3), are playing in their first state tournament since 1993. Ashley Albertson led the Warriors with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Albertson was 4 of 8 from the field and 8 of 10 from the line. Leading scorer Angela Woods scored seven points but was just 1 of 13 from the field, 1 of 9 from 3-point range. Edmonds-Woodway hit on just 4 of 21 3-point attempts.
