4A GIRLS NOTEBOOK: Edmonds-Woodway fan begs for one more

TACOMA — At the start of Thursday’s Edmonds-Woodway game, a fan in the E-W student section pleaded with the Warriors to extend their stay at state at least one more day — and not necessarily because he was a big basketball fan.

“I’ve got a lot of homework,” he screamed as the Warriors took the floor for the game, “and I haven’t done any of it.”

Long-range caster

Jordan Asher may have a sore arm this morning.

Asher, a guard for the Lewis &Clark girls basketball team, set a state-tournament record Thursday with 18 3-point attempts in the Tigers’ 69-49 win over Rogers. That broke the old mark of 17 set by Jessiye Clark of Jefferson in a game against Oak Harbor in 2002.

Asher made four of her 18 attempts and finished with a game-high 17 points.

In their 55-52 win over Federal Way on Thursday, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors took 42 shots from the field, 25 of them from 3-point range. And several of their treys originated well beyond the dotted NBA line painted on the Tacoma Dome floor.

No fear Warriors

The Warriors’ propensity to launch early and often — 17 of their first 24 shots were from 3-point range — didn’t bother E-W coach Duane Hodges in the least.

“We’ve been hitting threes all year,” said Hodges, who team shot 40 percent from 3-point range (10-for-25) on Thursday. “That’s kind of who we are.”

Teammate honored

Each player on the Issaquah girls basketball team had “4DT” written on her right shoulder for Thursday’s quarterfinal game against Lake Stevens. It was the Eagles’ way of honoring teammate Dayna Talley. The junior guard is out for the season with a torn ACL

Kingma Connection

Newport’s Betsy Kingma had one of the best individual performances in the girls 4A tournament in the consolation round in a 48-33 defeat over Puyallup Friday night.

The senior had 26 points, shot 4-for-9 from 3-point range and had with four rebounds and five blocks. She was happy with the win but almost more so with the opportunity to see her cousin — Jackson’s Brett Kingma — play later in the evening.

“I love watching Brett,” Betsy said. “I think he’s one of the most fun guys in this tournament to watch play. I always learning stuff from him. That NBA 3 point shot (that I hit) was kind of Brett range.”

Brett didn’t disappoint his cousin watching from the stands, turning in another stellar performance.

“I love getting a chance to watch Brett play,” Betsy said. “Usually our games are on the same nights or I have practice . (This week) we are in the same facility and I get to watch a lot of his games, which has been great. It’s a treat to get to watch him.”
