Hamid Karzai, you have been Tali-banned

Published 11:30 pm Tuesday, April 6, 2010

Hats off: Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s threat earlier this week to join the Taliban isn’t playing well in Washington, D.C. The White House said it might cancel an invitation for Karzai to visit in May.

That ought to keep Karzai in line. He’s really looking forward to coming to Washington because the Smithsonian had planned an exhibit on “Stylish Headwear of the World’s Leaders.”

Imaginary friends fly free: A regional airline based in Florida says it will now charge passengers $45 each way for each carry-on bag, in addition to its existing charge for checked luggage.

A second piece of carry-on luggage won’t be charged a fee, provided it’s stuffed with cash that you plan to leave with the airline.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1927, the image and voice of then-Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover was transmitted live from Washington, D.C., to New York, the first long-distance demonstration of television.

Hoover had planned to warn the nation of the coming Great Depression, but at the last minute decided instead to recite this little ditty: “Rose’s are red, Pearl’s are white; I seen ‘em on the clothesline just the other night.”
