Prep Roundup: Shorecrest stays unbeaten in boys soccer

SHORELINE — The Mariner boys soccer team kept its defense tight for the majority of Monday night’s game against undefeated Shorecrest.

But the Scots used a set play to break down the Marauders’ stingy defense, connecting on a goal in the 78th minute for a 1-0 victory.

Shorecrest remains undefeated at 4-0-0 in the Wesco South, 11-0-0 overall.

Shorecrest’s Michael Harris used a long-distance flip throw to teammate and co-captain Glenn Paden at the near post, and Paden flicked a cross to Hiei Rose. The senior center midfielder hit a low line drive that got past Mariner goalie Martin Banuelos for Rose’s third goal of the season and the game-winner in crunch time. It was Paden’s ninth assist of the season.

“That is something we work on all the time,” Shorecrest head coach Drew Thompson said of the play that began with Harris’ throw-in that travelled 30-35 yards until it found Paden. “That is one of our set pieces. We had free kicks earlier in the game that we couldn’t get to go in.

“Their goalkeeper deserves some credit, the ball was in his hands all night long. I had a feeling that it would come down to a set piece.”

Eric Baker got the shutout in goal for Shorecrest, with Thompson crediting him with some crucial saves on Mariner’s scoring opportunities.

Shorewood 4, Mountlake Terrace 3: At Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace’s Manix Alvarez (sixth and 13th minutes) and Hayk Avanesyan (11th and 21st minutes) of Shorewood each scored, before the Thunderbirds pulled away to earn the win. Tanner Jones (Avanesyan assist) and Essa Jallow (Jarren Petit), who each assisted an Avanesyan goal early in the game, added goals themselves for Shorewood (2-2 league, 6-4 overall) in the 42nd and 44th minutes respectively. Jonathan Alvarez (Manix Alvarez) had the other goal for the Hawks (1-3, 2-9). Maxwell Wright was the goalkeeper for Shorewood and Ben Winters manned the nets for Mountlake Terrace.

Glacier Peak 10, Meadowdale 0: At Bothell, Glacier Peak held a 6-0 lead at the 24-minute mark, and remain tied atop the Wesco South at 4-0 with Shorecrest. Glacier Peak’s Andrew Weakly and Olivier Goudreau combined for the shutout in goal for the Grizzlies. Brian Holguin led GP with two assists. Meadowdale fell to 1-3, 2-9.
