PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Monroe wins on back-to-back homers

Published 11:05 pm Thursday, April 22, 2010

MONROE — Tyler Ihrig hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth and teammate Troy Mantie followed with a walk-off home run as Monroe beat Wescoe North rival Arlington 9-8 in extra innings Thursday.

“Both teams battled all nine innings,” Monroe head coach Neil Henderson said. “It was very exciting to come out on the winning side after losing a 16 inning game to Marysville earlier this season.”

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 6-1 lead through two innings behind Ihrig’s three-run homer in the first and a Jared Boisseranc two-run home run in the second inning.

However, Arlington’s Justin Surber settled down after that, allowing his Eagle teammates to mount a comeback.

And that’s just what they did.

After Austin Baker singled with one out in the third, Surber followed with a two-run home run, cutting Monroe’s lead to 6-3. Then in the fifth inning, Marcus McKenzie took a leadoff walk, Tyler Wedland reached on an error and Baker singled to left to load the bases with none out. Dustin Ward then followed with a single scoring McKenzie. After a Surber strikeout, Andrew Thomas singled home Wedland and Baker to tie the game at six.

The two teams, led by relief pitchers McKenzie and Nathan Whiton, were held scoreless until the ninth inning when Arlington scored two behind a Thomas RBI single and a wild pitch.

McKenzie, however, couldn’t close it out for the Eagles as Ihrig and Mantie homered to give Monroe the victory.

Ihrig finished 2-for-5 with the two home runs and five RBI.
