PREP TRACK ROUNDUP: Rookie sprinter helps Mariner make history

Published 11:06 pm Thursday, April 29, 2010

EVERETT — It was a first-year sprinter that helped Mariner overcome an age-old losing streak Thursday.

Keivare Russell won the 100- and 200-meter events and Mariner won its first-ever dual meet against Kamiak. The Marauder boys won 93-52 with the Kamiak girls winning 82-66.

“He is young and enthusiastic,” Mariner boys track coach Dave McFadden said of Russell, a star sophomore running back on the football team who is running track for the first season. “He is bringing some flexibility … he is just a tremendously hard worker. He is always wanting to know what he can do to be stronger and faster.”

Along with Russell’s sizzling 100-meter time (a personal best 11.35 seconds, third best time this season in the Wesco South behind Shorewood’s Blaine Webber and Edmonds-Woodway’s Alec Fellows), Mariner swept the remaining three top spots behind Russell in the 100 and 200 to rack up points.

“This took some depth, we were fortunate this year to be with some good young sprinters,” McFadden said of Mariner’s success.

Carissa Boeme broke a Mariner school record in the pole vault, going 8 feet, 3 inches to win the event.
