PREP ROUNDUP: Everett pitcher hangs on in seventh to beat Monroe

Published 9:46 am Friday, April 30, 2010

EVERETT — Everett head coach Kyle Peacocke needed a pitcher this year and sophomore Lexie Levin answered his need.

After being hit in the face by a line drive while pitching two years ago, Levin quit pitching but returned to the mound this season and earned another Everett win with a 6-2 victory over Monroe Tuesday night at Lincoln Field.

The win has Everett undefeated at 1-0 in league, 4-0 overall. Monroe is now 0-1, 2-3.

“We (Levin and Peacocke) talked about Lexie pitching,” Peacocke said. “I guess you could say we came to a mutual agreement. She wanted to pitch and we needed to fill the role.”

Levin blasted a two-run home run in the first inning and Olivia Juarez hit a two-run single with two outs for a 4-0 Everett lead after the first. Everett tacked on two more in the second for a 6-0 lead.

Things got interesting for Levin and the Seagulls in the top of the seventh. Levin got the first two Monroe batters out, but back-to-back infield hits put runners on base for Monroe. Two more hits drove in two Bearcats runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Levin was able to popup Monroe’s cleanup hitter to seal the win.

Levin finished the game with five strikeouts and three walks and batted 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Peacocke said during the final moments of the seventh inning he was saying “nothing is over until it is over.”
