Man killed at Port Orchard apartment lived nearby

PORT ORCHARD — An autopsy today may help explain a fatal shooting at a Port Orchard apartment complex.

Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 72-year-old man for investigation of manslaughter. He said someone had broken into his apartment early Saturday and he fired four shots toward the intruder as he ran away, trying to hit his legs.

The body of a 22-year-old was found after sunrise.

Friends told The Kitsap Sun the victim was Donald Axthelm, who shared an apartment with two other men at the same complex. He worked as a painter and had an eight-month-old daughter with an ex-girlfriend.
