A team of fourth- and fifth-graders from Brighton School in Lynnwood is in Knoxville, Tenn., this week, May 24-29, for the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals, after winning a state-level tournament in March.

More than 16,000 people from hundreds of teams around the world are expected to attend the Tennessee event. Destination ImagiNation is a nonprofit group whose annual competitions emphasize creativity, teamwork and problem solving.

For the March state-level competition, the Brighton team took top honors for projectOUTREACH, in which they raised money for the Driftwood Players in Edmonds. Students raised $475 from a two-day bake sale, then volunteered at the theater company’s “Grease” sing-along event as well as hosting a Rydell High Dance-Off. For the competition, the team also created and performed an 8-minute student-written play.

“This team is a dedicated group of talented, creative students,” said Russ Noble, a coach and vice principal.

Meadowdale students get ‘Close Up’ view D.C.

Eighteen students from Meadowdale High School returned from Washington, D.C., May 14 after meeting with key people in government, law, business and media to gain real-world insights into how the nation’s capital works through the Close Up program.

Students met with members of Congress, including Rep. Jay Inslee and Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. They also discussed issues with policy experts and spoke with journalists about how media shapes policy. Students also had an opportunity to tour the capital and see monuments.

Meadowdale participates in Close Up each May thanks to the sponsorship of the Lynnwood Kiwanis and Edmonds Lions Club.

Students participating were: Molly Addicott, Andre Alidadi, Emily Bainbridge, Edward Bushnell, Thomas Curry, Kelsey Dysart, Chris Fuller, Breann Johnson, Nicole Miller, Hyunjy O, Alec Olsen, Isabel Reeb, Oscar Serrano, Derek Shelton, Colin Summers, Cameo Townsend, Michael Truax and Sarah Wright. Seaview raises big bucks for Clothes for Kids

Students at Seaview Elementary School in Edmonds raised more than $2,900 for Clothes for Kids in their weeklong Coins for Kids fundraiser that ended May 21.

The annual campaign held by schools throughout the Edmonds School District during the year helps to stock a clothing center with things like underwear and socks for needy children in the district.

The school of about 400 students exceeded its goal of $2,000, “pretty good for a small elementary school,” office manager Marsha Gray said.

One student, first-grader Michael Walter, raised $200 by giving up his allowance, selling his toys at a yard sale and selling lemonade, his mom said.

Classes that raised the most money got ice-cream parties.

The new Lynnwood High School has been selected as one of three finalists in the nation for the James D. MacConnell Award from the Council of Educational Facility Planners International.

Matthew S. Landon of Lynnwood, a student at Meadowdale High School, was named a National Merit Scholar and will receive one of the program’s college-sponsored scholarships, in this case from the University of Central Florida.

Landon plans a career in sociology.

Landon was among more than 2,800 winners of college-sponsored scholarships announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Another round of winners will be announced in July. Colleges select the winners from National Merit Scholarship Program finalists. The program looks at a student’s Preliminary SAT scores and an essay.
