SELAH — Unfortunately for Granite Falls, their Memorial Day Weekend just opened up.
After dropping two games on Friday in the 2A state tournament at Carlon Park in Selah, Granite Falls saw its amazing season come to an end.
The Tigers dominated the Cascade Conference, finishing the season 18-0 with their lone loss coming in the district tournament. Understandably, their goals entering the postseason were set high.
But it was not to be. The Tigers opened up with a 13-3, six-inning defeat at the hands of Hoquiam and followed with a 5-3 loss to Steilacoom.
Surprisingly, their undoing was pitching, one of their real strengths all year. Alyssa Arndt and Alicia Amundson walked a total of 19 batters over the span of 13 innings, 11 in the game against Steilacoom.
Emily Waldon batted 2-for-2 and Sarah Hensley batted 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opening game against Hoquiam. Chelaina Crews went 2-for-3 in the second game.
“It was really tough for the girls,” said Granite Falls head coach Candi Reeves. “These kids have had such a great season, they have nothing to hang their heads over. They should be very proud of what they accomplished this year.”
