Rotary, city workers clean Howarth Park
A team of people from the Rotary Club of Everett Port Gardner and the Everett Parks Department recently began clean-up work at Howarth Park in Everett.
They started work at the trailhead in the lower parking lot and extended to the stairs leading up to the pedestrian overpass.
The team removed debris from the area including blackberries, ivy and trash. Under the supervision of parks department employee Mason Hopkins, limbs and other obstructions were removed from the streams and pathway.
The Everett Port Gardner Rotary club plans to make Howarth Park part of its ongoing community service program.
Fun run aids Guide Dogs of America
The Women’s Committee of Machinists Union District Lodge 751 raised nearly $10,000 through its ninth annual Flight for Sight Fun Run on June 5 in Everett.
All proceeds go to Guide Dogs of America, a charity that helps place trained guide dogs with blind or vision-impaired people across North America.
Ray Meduna, a union steward who works for Boeing in Everett, collected $1,300 in pledges for the run.
In all, the race attracted 112 runners and walkers who took part in one of three events: a timed 5K race, a timed 10K race, or a one-mile walk. The courses started and finished at the Boeing Everett Activities Center on Seaway Boulevard.
District 751 represents hourly workers at Boeing and 42 other employers across Washington and California.
Rotary auction raises $100,000
The South Everett- Mukilteo Rotary Club raised $100,000 to benefit local, district and international service projects at the “A Night on Broadway-Act II” auction at the Everett Events Center.
The 16th annual fundraising event on April 10 was attended by more than 250 people. Mayor of Mukilteo Joe Marine was the emcee of the event and John Curley was the auctioneer.
A portion of the auction was dedicated to Fund A Need, where patrons donate to a specific cause. The Casino Road Boys and Girls Club food program was the recipient of nearly $14,000 raised during the Fund A Need part of the night. The Casino Road Boys &Girls Club feeds 100 children breakfast and dinner every day.
Students from Kamiak High School’s performing arts program provided entertainment during the silent auctions by singing tunes from the spring musical. Kamiak’s Leadership Class also provided volunteers to work during the auction.
Monroe students help food bank
Park Place Middle School in Monroe recently held a food drive on behalf of the Sky Valley Food Bank. Students collected 1,160 pounds of food and $436.35 in cash.

Edmonds Rotary Club honors seniors
The Rotary Club of Edmonds recently awarded scholarships to 15 high school seniors.
The annual Edmonds Rotary Waterfront Festival is the major source of scholarships awarded to students. This year’s scholarship recipients received special recognition at the Edmonds Rotary meeting held before the Waterfront Festival on June 4-6 in Edmonds.
Seniors from Edmonds-Woodway, Meadowdale and Scriber Lake high schools were awarded scholarships of $1,500. These students included Maria Ambrocio, Chris Barker, Megan Baxter, Teos Bisbee, Lea Fairbanks, Katherine Hamburg, Jon Kim, Maggie Lausch, Kevin Mayo, Annalicia McDougal, Wade Mendisabal, Delia Mendoza, Kelly Nichols-Hoppe, Raymond Yap and Sam Werner.
Stanwood-Camano scholarships awarded
More than 130 students and their families packed the Stanwood High School auditorium on June 1 for the community’s annual scholarship night.
The scholarship program is coordinated by the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation.
Organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, American Legion, and Chamber of Commerce host fundraising events while businesses such as Whidbey Island Bank and Charles Hall Orthodontics, and many churches also provide support for the program.
During the event, Stanwood High School principal Christine Gruver, announced that more than $120,000 had been awarded to the class of 2010.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation.
Everett school elects new commissioners
St. Mary Magdalen School recently elected its new Board of Commissioners for the 2010-2011 school year.
The board consists of Ben Adams, commissioner general; Claire Brockmyre, commissioner of activities; Sarah Crockett, commissioner of service; Dominick Do-Tong, commissioner of religion; Celina Georgeadis, commissioner of publicity; Connor Mulvaney, commissioner of spirit; and Joey Thompson, commissioner of ecology.
Toastmaster’s Club celebrates 8 years
The Snohomish County Toastmaster’s Club 690 celebrated their eighth anniversary on May 24 with a club dinner.
The club’s focus is training individuals in areas of public speaking and leadership.
During the event, club president and vice president of education, Frank Slusser, announced that many of its members have received awards for their achievement during the past year.
Several members received the Competent Communicator award, including Caroline Barlow, Eric Bryan, Todd Cudaback and Andrea Hill. Members Laura Caster, Pat Cudinski and Steve Torrence achieved advanced communicator and leader awards. Caster also received the title of Distinguished Toastmaster.
The anniversary dinner concluded with the club honoring Barlow as the Toastmaster of the Year. She is the vice president of membership and also coordinates “Post Toasties” once a month, where members and guests have a meal together at an Everett restaurant after the meeting.
