Very un-Christian of you

A 61-year-old South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family last Sunday.

David Makoeya wanted to watch Germany play Australia. His 68-year-old wife, 36-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter wanted to watch a gospel show. An argument followed and then a fight for the remote control at their home in the small village of Makweya in the country’s northeastern part.

“It appears they banged his head against the wall,” police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said. “They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead.”

The mother and children were arrested. Mom and son are still in jail while the daughter was released on bail.

Shut up, or else: Organizers are making sure there will be no racket from vuvuzelas at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

The plastic horns which have provided a constant drone at the World Cup in South Africa are banned from the Grand Slam tournament, which starts Monday at the All England Club.

“Rattles, klaxons and vuvuzelas … will not be allowed into the grounds,” All England Club chief executive Ian Ritchie said.

PARTING SHOT

“It’s shameful to lose like that. It’s a question of saving our honor.”
