Officer wins Show and Shine Award

City of Mountlake Terrace Police Department motor officer Eric Jones recently received first place in the Show and Shine competition from the North American Motor Officers Association at their 25th annual training conference in Marysville.

The Show and Shine competition provides an opportunity for officers to show their pride in the care and maintenance of their motor unit. Participants’ motor units are judged for overall cleanliness with a white glove inspection, the set-up of emergency equipment and graphic appeal.

Jones, who rides a 2009 Harley Davidson Road King Police model, won first place out of 160 motorcycle officers.

He was presented with a plaque and trophy that will be engraved with his name and passed to a new winner every year. An eight-year veteran of the department, Jones is currently assigned to the City of Mountlake Terrace Police Department’s Traffic Unit.

Arlington resident earns scholarship

The Zonta Club of Everett presented their Jane M. Klausman Scholarship on June 17 at the Everett Golf and Country Club. Each year the Zonta Club of Everett recognizes a young woman pursuing an undergraduate degree in business management. The recipient of thise year’s award is Heather Boe of Arlington.

The $2,000 scholarship will help Boe complete her education at the University of Washington. She plans to graduate in June 2011 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a major in finance and accounting.

Horse essay winners named

Winners of an essay contest at Horse Country Farm in Granite Falls were recently announced. The first place winners receive a free week of horse day camp.

Haylee Brotherton of Granite Falls won first place in the first through third grade category. Skye Sullivan of Everett and Jalyn Dodd of Monroe won second place; Vaughn Galassi of Monroe, Jillian Pratt of Marysville, Nicole Miller of Stanwood received third place; and Alyssa King of Granite Falls and Madison Galassi of Marysville received fourth place.

Madison Cox of Lakewood won first place in the fourth through sixth grade category. Second prize was presented to Savannah Pratt of Marysville and Zoe Hunter of Granite Falls; third place recipients were Sara Standard of Arlington, Yunuen Septimo of Everett and Mikayla Badgley of Bothell; and the fourth place winners were Elaine Ries of Monroe and Faith Dye of Lake Stevens.

The first place winner in the seventh to ninth grade category was Tiana Stead of Snohomish. Devan Huet and Tiffany Riley of Arlington won second place and Kyleyah Williams of Arlington received third place.

Kristen Hartigan of Granite Falls and Maggie Nolan of Mill Creek won first place in the Counselor In Training essay contest and each won a week at Counselor In Training Camp.

Other winners of the junior and senior Counselor In Training essay contests were Isabelle Eelnurme of Lake Stevens, Destiny Kindred of Marysville, Anthony Markert and Cierra Markert of Lynnwood, Mark Markert and Michael Markert of Mountlake Terrace, Amy Pilloud of Mukilteo, Adalyn Tibbets of Lake Stevens, and Rhys Slee of Everett.

County’s HR workers honored

Snohomish County’s Human Resources Department was recently honored for the outplacement services offered to employees facing layoffs.

The National Association of Counties recognized the department led by Bridget Clawson for services to help employees find new employment. The program also provides resources to employees’ families, including training and community assistance.

The county’s Human Resources Department was recognized with the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility.

The National Association of Counties is the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States. This is the 41st year of its Achievement Award program.

YMCA honors volunteers

The YMCA of Snohomish County honored its policy, program, and youth volunteers at a recognition breakfast on June 9 at the Everett Golf and Country Club.

Volunteers earn service awards

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program sponsored by Catholic Community Services recently held their 38th annual volunteer recognition at the Everett Elks Lodge in Everett.

The event included two luncheons that were attended by more than 300 people. Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson and state Sen. Jean Berkey, D-Everett, spoke during the event where recipients of the President’s Lifetime Service Award were recognized.

The award was presented to volunteers with more than 4,000 hours of community service. Recipients received a President’s Call to Service pin, a certificate from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation and a letter from President Barack Obama.

This years President’s Lifetime Service Award winners were Cordice Dinger-Dickson, Olga Kudelka, Darlene Lockhart, Malena Magnuson, Joyce Spaulding and Ellen Wilkie of Arlington; Raymond Ferguson of Brier; Elsie Krueger, Mary Ann Malchow, Helen Miller and Evangeline Mitchell of Edmonds; Robert Bibb, Sharon Brosius, Mel Crump, Thomas Huffman, Susan Lloyd, Margo Spencer and Herbert Williams of Everett; Delores Sternola and Katherine Twitchell of Lynnwood; Ruth Cantley and Doris Lyon of Marysville; Chizuko Havens of Mill Creek; Rita Barr, Joy Dennis and Christine Forbes of Monroe; Patricia Quick and Louise Scollard of Mountlake Terrace; and Anita Dubois, Lenore Haight, Daniel Hanna, Dick Henry, Carol Jarrett, Lois Lingren, Jim Perin, Harriet Rinas, Vern Salsbery, Gladys Schlosser, Mary Smith, and Donald Spears of Stanwood.

Lynnwood VFW Post 1040 awards

The Lynnwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 received awards at the 90th Annual Convention of the Department of Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars June 16-19 in Vancouver, Wash.

The awards included Police Officer of the Year for Lynnwood Police officer Cole Langdon; State Veteran of the Year, post senior vice commander Frank Martinez; second place Post Publications Newsletter; All State Team Commander, post commander Martin Spani; All State Team Quartermaster and National Voice of Democracy Chairman awards, post quartermaster John Beam; and the Chaplain Certificate of Appreciation, post chaplains George Janecke and Brian Seguin.

VFW Post 1040 also received national recognition awards for Outstanding Voice of Democracy Program, Outstanding Safety Programs and Outstanding Buddy Poppy Program as well as the Department Loyalty Day award, Hospital award, United Services Organization Program award, and Patriots Pen award.

The National Military Services Recognition Award was given to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 for their support of men and women serving on active military duty throughout the world, their families, and hospitalized veterans.

The award will be announced on Aug. 23 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.
