Eyman delivers more signatures to stop red-light cameras in Mukilteo

MUKILTEO — Tim Eyman, who’s pushing an anti-red-light camera initiative here, turned in what he says are 2,900 newly gathered petition signatures at City Hall on Friday.
Eyman gathered the new signatures after the Snohomish County Elections and Voter Registration Division told him his earlier efforts resulted in hundreds of invalid signatures.
Eyman, known for his statewide anti-tax initiatives, wants a public vote before cameras can be used to track red-light runners or speeders. His initiative would require the public vote and limits infractions to the least expensive parking violation, which is $20.
Eyman needs 1,793 valid signatures before the initiative can go on the November ballot. Those signatures must be certified by the county.
Monday, the council agreed to hold off on plans to hire an Arizona company to install and operate red-light and school speed-zone cameras along the Mukilteo Speedway.
The council had approved a contract in May. If Eyman’s petitions are certified as valid, the council could vote to place the initiative on the ballot, make its provisions city law or take no action.
