One Camano resident wonders about Colt’s hair

Folks around Camano Island are buzzing about the capture of fugitive Colton Harris-Moore.
As I wrote last week, my mother, who lives on Camano, is mostly interested in capturing bunnies eating her peas.
She did have one Colton question after seeing his picture.
“Who’s been cutting his hair?”

No one is happier that Fourth of July blasting is over than Dennis Carver who lives near Boom City. He says before the holiday, every few seconds, a sleep-preventing boom occurred.
“I’ve come to hate Boom City and its 115-plus fireworks stands,” he wrote via e-mail. “So far the only thing that keeps the peace out here is rain.”
He’s irked that anyone with a few bucks can go to Boom City and interrupt his attempt to sleep. Carver said the first night the noise really got to him and he called 911.
“They patched me to the tribal police,” he said. “When I told the man, who didn’t identify himself, that I was complaining about the noise from Boom City, he said ‘Well, it is getting close to the Fourth.’ ”
Once upon a time, Carver says, fireworks were a way to celebrate freedom.
“Now it’s just anarchy, chaos, perhaps meanness,” he says. “Try getting up at 5:15 a.m. when fireworks kept you awake until almost 11 p.m.”
He says now that it’s over, he feels relieved and puts it all in the past.
But anyone living in a older, thin-walled home with uninsulated windows must have felt like they needed to move away, he says.

Waterfront Art festival, presented by the Mukilteo Arts Guild, is planned for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Mukilteo Lighthouse Park, 608 Front Street. Mukilteo Arts Guild President Christine Award Schmalz says the show features seasoned as well as young and upcoming artists.
Proceeds from vendor booths go to the Mukilteo Scholarship Fund for high school seniors pursuing art in higher education.
“This years recipients are special due to overcoming the odds in their lives,” she says. “I was touched by their work and their accomplishments in high school. Art saves lives. It saved mine and it is wonderful seeing it save others whose lives are at risk.”
