EVERETT — Matt Epstein did not play in last year’s inaugural Everett Men’s Amateur Championship, but wasted little time Saturday in giving notice that he was in the field this year.
He opened with par on the 344-yard first hole, an eagle on the 516-yard second hole and then a birdie on the 218-yard No. 3 and tallied a 7-under par 65 in the tournament’s first round at Walter Hall Golf Course.
Paul Pavlos, Woodinville, was second after the first day with a 2-under 68.
Defending champion Reid Martin, Mukilteo, quickly found himself seven strokes back after shooting a 1-over 37 on the course’s front nine. He got things turned around quickly by starting the back nine birdie, eagle, par, birdie. He finished the opening round with a 3-under 69 and was in third place.
Today’s final round will be played at Legion Memorial Golf Course with the first groups teeing off at 6:45 a.m. and the final lead group teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
