LYNNWOOD — Much like bananas, goals, too, come in bunches.
Monroe’s Alyssa Drew, who scored three goals in the game, scored two goals in the first four minutes after halftime to lead the Bearcats to a 3-1 Wesco 4A girls soccer win over Edmonds-Woodway Thursday at Lynnwood H.S.
“Defensively we weren’t in the right shape,” Warriors’ coach Bill LeCompte said, “and they caught up to us again. That’s what happens. A lot of goals are scored in bunches.”
Drew struck first in the 41st minute, breaking the scoreless tie off an assist from Casey Neumann. Three minutes later Drew scored her second goal.
“They came out of halftime and they got on the board quick,” LeCompte said, “and followed up again shortly thereafter.”
Monroe’s (6-3 league, 7-3 overall) Drew added a third insurance goal in the 78th minute to finish the scoring.
Sophie Judd, who accounted for Edmonds-Woodway’s lone score, notched an impressive goal in the 70th minute. Judd curved a corner kick into the upper left-hand corner of the goal to get the Warriors (5-4, 6-5) on the board.
“She saw something and just kind of went for it,” LeCompte said. “We’re down a goal and you’re trying to get it on the pole as quick as possible.
“You’d have to ask her if she meant to do that.”
Michelle Rumpel and Kristin Lyshall split time in goal for Edmonds-Woodway.
