Help restore city’s namesake

The city of Mill Creek and Adopt a Stream will hold a native planting event on the stream called Mill Creek from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 17.
The old Smokehouse building on the Bothell-Everett Highway was demolished in August. The building was located inches from Mill Creek, and the city now needs help bringing the site back to its natural state by planting native vegetation.
Parking will be located at the Merrill Gardens Retirement Home, 14905 Bothell-Everett Highway.
This planting event will happen rain or shine. For questions, call Marci Chew at 425-921-5709.
Please bring gloves, boots and appropriate clothing. Snacks and drinking water will be provided. Please plan on leaving your pets at home.
Get your yard winter ready
Jessica Bloom will be the guest speaker at the Mill Creek Garden Club’s Oct. 14 meeting.
Bloom will be give a timely presentation on preparing gardens and yards for winter. Participants will learn how to prune plants, shrubs and trees and what plants survive best in our Northwest climate.
Membership in the Garden Club is open to all serious or social gardeners, and the monthly meetings are held at the Mill Creek Country Club starting at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon. Four seats open on art board
The city of Mill Creek is seeking volunteers to serve on the Art and Beatification Advisory Board.
There are four positions, each of which will expire Oct. 31, 2012. The board meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. Board members must be Mill Creek residents.
Duties and responsibilities include advising the council, as requested, on special events and projects to enhance the aesthetics and beauty within the residential and business areas of the city; utilizing the municipal art fund; and selecting artwork for the city.

Exhibit focuses on rural gems
Photographer Richard Duval’s “Of Wine and Wheat: Images from Washington’s Rural Empire” will be on display Oct. 16 through Nov. 20 at Musings Artist Inspired gift store in Mill Creek Town Center, 15408 Main St., Suite 103.
The exhibit features select canvas and framed images of Washington vineyards and wineries, along with landscapes of the sprawling Palouse agricultural area. An artist reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16 featuring select Washington wines.
Based near Mill Creek, Duval travels throughout the Northwest for his photography. His work has been published in Alaska Airlines Magazine, 425 Magazine, Northwest Travel, Vermont Life and Nature Photographer, as well as several greeting card and calendar publishers. Rotary stays busy meeting needs
The Mill Creek Rotary Club has taken on a busy fall schedule of projects aimed at helping the local and world communities.
These projects include:
Ÿ Operation Soldier’s Angel, which sends care packages to members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ÿ Partnering with the Mercer Island Rotary Club to provide clean water and sanitation facilities serving 10,000 people in India.
Ÿ Financial and volunteer support for Rotary First Harvest, which provides produce to over 1.4 million hungry Washington residents.
Ÿ Financial and volunteer support to the annual and popular city of Mill Creek Halloween “Trunk or Treat,” a safe and fun venue for the community’s little goblins.
The Mill Creek Rotary is made up of local business and professional men and women who meet on Wednesdays for lunch at the Mill Creek Country Club.

Conservationists call for volunteers
The state Recreation and Conservation Office is looking for a variety of volunteers to help evaluate grant proposals for new parks and trails and for the best wildlife lands and farmlands to preserve. Volunteers will evaluate recreation grant applications and make funding recommendations to the state Recreation and Conservation Funding Board for new facilities and land purchases statewide. County desires tourism projects
Snohomish County is currently accepting applications from public and non-profit agencies for projects that promote tourism and overnight stays in the county. Deadline is Monday, Oct. 26. Funds will be available January 2010.
